CV

Medical degree, dental degree & orthodontic postgraduate program acquired at the University of Siena. Part time Ass. Professor at the orthodontic department of the University of Siena (1993- 2015).
Affiliated to the orthodontic department of University of Aarhus, DK, since 1992.
Affiliated to the orthodontic department of the University of Buffalo USA, (2012-2014).
Secretary General of SIDO in the years 1998-1999. Vice-president of Italian Society of Orthodontic Biomechanics in the years 1999-2002. President of Biomede.
His main professional interests are: orthodontic biomechanics, use of computer within the orthodontic practice (especially related to mechanics design and tx planning), segmented arch technique and adult orthodontic treatment.
He has published about 30 papers about the fields mentioned above.
He is the creator of the software T3do and DMA for Orthodontic tx planning and mechanics design & has co-published with Prof. Birte Melsen the «Biomechanics in Orthodontics» multimedia software, presently at release 4.
Co-writer in two chapters of the book «Adult Orthodontics» edited by Birte Melsen, and in the book orthodontic Pearls, edited by Larry White.
Author of the chapter «Statically Determined Appliances and Creative Mechanics» in the textbook «The Biomechanical Foundation of Clinical Orthodontics» edited by Prof. Burstone and Choy.
Invited speaker at meetings of AAO, EOS, Italian, Japanese, Australian, Finnish, Greek, Lebanese and Greater Dallas orthodontic societies.
Also he has lectured about biomechanics at the Universities of Aarhus - DK, Edmonton and Montreal (Mc Gill)- Canada, Baylor - Dallas, New York (NYU and Columbia), Buffalo, Philadelphia and Chicago (USA), Berlin Humboldt - GER, Basel and Zurich, Switzerland, Goteborg -Sweden, European University College, Dubai, UAE, UnCeo Bogotá - Colombia, Santiago - Chile, and several Italian schools.
He currently holds private courses of biomechanics in Italy and Portugal, and is head of the European Orthodontic Biomechanics School, which organizes since 2013 an intensive five-week program attended by orthodontists from in all continents. His private practice is limited to orthodontics since 1983. Currently in his birth town Arezzo(I), Richterswil & Lugano (CH)

«The Rational Orthodontic Treatment Plan & Mechanics Design: An Introduction»

The usual orthodontic treatment is based on a predetermined sequence of wires engaged into the slot of brackets having, supposedly, all the needed information to bring at the end of treatment the teeth into an ideal position. As an alternative, many orthodontists are now considering the use of clear aligners that will simply reproduce an alignment by a sequential approach to it.
These procedures, that maybe defined as shape driven mechanics, have transformed and simplified by a great extent the orthodontist's daily routine; however, several limitations are also correlated with such an approach, especially if the clinician has not the capability to analyze and solve specific problems that are sometimes encountered.
In this course, we will introduce the participants to the basic concepts needed to design a customized, force driven orthodontic appliance, and more specifically: the 3d treatment goal definition, the dental movement analysis and estimation of the needed force systems, the anchorage evaluation by equilibrium analysis and the essential concepts related to statically determinate appliances.

«Hands On Course on Computerized Occlusogram (T3do Software), Orthodontic Calculators & Dental Movement Analysis (OCDMA Software)»

This course, limited to a small group of doctors, will introduce the participants to the use of two softwares that have been designed to support the orthodontist in custom mechanics design.
The T3do software is used to determine the possible outcome of a treatment depending on the many therapeutical decision that the orthodontist can take: as the dental arch shape and size, the simmetry axis, the extraction or non extraction decision, the definition of the position of the anterior teeth. This software shows the planned dental movements in 3d and can be used as guidance for the dental setup on digital models.
The OCDMA software performs several calculations that are related to the biomechanics analysis, including estimation of the needed force system for a given movement, evaluation of static equilibrium and some kinds of vector calculations.
